Iranian Airways was established by some businessmen in May 1944 and began its flights just after World War II to the holy city of Mashhad in Iran. Over the course of 17 years (1945-1962), Iranian Airways had developed into a major national airline with a few international flights per week. The fleet at that time included Douglas DC-4, Douglas DC-3 and Vickers Viscount.

In 1965, Iran Air received its first jet aircraft, which was of the model Boeing 727. These were followed by Boeing 737. Boeing 747-SP, Boeing 747-100 and Boeing 747-200 were also supplied. In the mid-1970s, Iran Air had direct flights to European cities
