Alitalia

Alitalia is Italy’s largest national airline. Alitalia has now merged with Air One after extensive work by the Italian government.

Until the Second World War, Ala Littoria was Italy’s national airline. After the war, Alitalia took over this role. The name comes from the Italian ala (plural ali) which means wings in Italian, thus the name means wings of Italy. In 1946 Linee Aeree Italiane (LAI) was formed as a state airline for domestic flights and for international flights Aerolinee Italiane Internazionali called Alitalia. In the late 1950s, Alitalia took over LAI’s operations.
